Work aimed at how AI-assisted search and answer environments — Google's AI features, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and whatever follows — find, understand and represent your business.
AI Search Optimization is the commercial umbrella for work that improves a business's ability to be discovered, understood, surfaced, mentioned, recommended or cited across AI-assisted search and answer environments.
It is not a way to buy placement, and no agency has special access to these systems. What it is: making your business accessible, unambiguous, factually consistent and externally corroborated, so that when a system assembles an answer about businesses like yours, the material it needs about you exists and agrees with itself.
These three terms are frequently used interchangeably. We keep them distinct, because they describe work at different levels.
The overall discipline: improving discovery, understanding, surfacing, mention, recommendation and citation of a business across AI-assisted search and answer environments. This is the commercial service; AEO and GEO are focus areas within it.
Operates at the level of individual answers. Makes specific information explicit, extractable, concise, contextually complete, semantically clear, structured and useful — so a single statement survives being taken out of the page. Read the AEO definition.
Operates at the level of the source. Improves broader eligibility and credibility for generative discovery through entity clarity, authority, external corroboration, source presence, citations, brand mentions, factual consistency and original information. Read the GEO definition.
AI-assisted answers now appear in Google's AI features, in assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini, in answer engines like Perplexity, in Bing and Copilot, and increasingly inside products that embed a model rather than a search box.
Each behaves differently, and their behavior changes without notice. We do not claim inclusion in any of them, and we don't treat a screenshot of one good answer as evidence of visibility. What generalizes across them is the underlying condition: a business that is accessible, clearly defined and consistently described is easier for any of these systems to represent.
If a page can't be fetched and parsed, it can't inform an answer. Rendering, robots directives, status codes and page structure come first.
Many AI answers draw on sources already surfacing in conventional search. Organic visibility is an input, not a separate track.
One unambiguous description of who the business is, what it does, where it operates, and who is behind it — consistent in visible content and structured data.
Statements that still make sense when lifted out of the page: explicit definitions, direct answers, self-contained sentences.
Name, address, phone, services, hours and claims that agree across your site, your profiles and third-party sources. Conflicts create uncertainty.
Schema that reflects what is visibly on the page, plus tables, lists and headings that make relationships explicit.
Independent sources that confirm the business exists and does what it says — associations, publications, partners, credible directories.
Material that isn't a restatement of what every competitor published. Original explanation, process detail, and documented method give a system a reason to reference you.
Map how the business is currently described across its site, its profiles and third-party sources, and find the contradictions.
Confirm the content that should inform answers can actually be crawled, rendered and indexed.
Rewrite key pages so definitions, direct answers and decision criteria are explicit and self-contained.
Bring schema into agreement with visible content and with the sitewide entity graph.
Strengthen the external record: accurate listings, legitimate references, verifiable profiles.
Repeatable prompt observation against a documented method, reported as observations rather than rankings.
We measure what can be measured, distinguish observations from hypotheses, and publish methodology before conclusions. Ranking Wolf has not completed a controlled benchmark of AI recommendation or citation behavior in El Paso, so nothing on this site reports one.
What is published is the reasoning framework and the method we intend to use: the AI Search Ranking Factors framework, the AI Visibility Index methodology, and the research agenda with each study's real status attached.
Most of what makes a business legible to an AI system also makes it legible to a crawler. Start with the organic SEO foundation, and if you depend on nearby customers, the local search ecosystem — profile accuracy and consistent business information are direct inputs here.
AI Search Optimization is the commercial umbrella for work that improves a business's ability to be discovered, understood, surfaced, mentioned, recommended or cited across AI-assisted search and answer environments. It includes Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization as focus areas.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) works at the level of individual answers — making specific information explicit, extractable, concise, contextually complete, semantically clear, structured and useful. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) works at the level of the source — improving eligibility and credibility for generative discovery through entity clarity, authority, external corroboration, citations, brand mentions, factual consistency and original information.
No one can promise that. These systems select and synthesize sources through processes no agency controls or has privileged access to. What can be improved is whether your business is accessible, clearly described, factually consistent and externally corroborated — the conditions under which any system is more likely to represent you correctly.
Through repeatable prompt observation against a documented method: the same prompts, recorded conditions, results logged over time. We report observations, not rankings, and we do not claim measurements we have not made. Our benchmark work is published with its current status on the research page.
No. It depends on it. Crawlability and conventional visibility are inputs into AI-assisted answers. AI Search Optimization adds emphasis on entity clarity, extractability and corroboration on top of a healthy site.
It's relevant whenever buyers ask an assistant for a recommendation instead of typing a query into Google. For a local business, the practical work is largely the same discipline that supports Maps and organic visibility — accurate, consistent, verifiable information — applied with more attention to how it reads when extracted.
We'll review how clearly your business is defined, how consistent its information is across sources, and what would have to change for AI-assisted systems to describe it correctly.
