How Perplexity selects and cites sources

Perplexity is the most transparent generative engine — every answer is annotated with sources, making its selection logic reverse-engineerable.

Because Perplexity exposes its sources in every answer, it's the easiest engine to study. Our analysis of 600 Perplexity answers identified three dominant selection patterns: schema clarity, definitive answer structure, and citation reciprocity.

§ 01

Schema-first selection

Perplexity disproportionately cites pages with FAQ, HowTo, and Article schema. Schema effectively pre-labels content for the model.

§ 02

Definitive answer structure

Pages that lead with a short, definitive answer paragraph (then expand) are cited at roughly 3× the rate of pages that bury the answer.

§ 03

Citation reciprocity

Pages that themselves cite authoritative sources are more frequently cited by Perplexity. The model rewards demonstrated source discipline.
